Artificial intelligence, labour markets, and how students should choose a field of study when the experts cannot agree on the outcome.
Abstract
This paper examines a question now facing every student, parent, and counsellor: how should one choose a field of study when the labour market is being reshaped by artificial intelligence and serious experts cannot agree on the outcome? Drawing on labour economics, large-scale employer surveys, and university enrolment data from 2024 to 2026, it advances three claims. First, artificial intelligence displaces tasks rather than whole occupations. Second, the acute risk falls on the first rung of the career ladder, not on the ladder itself. Third, geography and adaptability now shape outcomes more decisively than the prestige of any single credential. The paper introduces the Zenith Future Resilience Matrix, a framework that grades fields not by perceived safety but by the durability of their economic moats, the direction of demand, and whether artificial intelligence augments or erodes the underlying work. The point is not to predict what is coming, but to prepare for it: stay flexible, demonstrate proof of work, and learn to read a moving target.
