Which universities in Italy teach medicine in English?
Italy has the largest group. For 2026/27, these public universities filled their English-taught places through the IMAT national exam:
- Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Florence, Messina and Parma
- Milan and Milano-Bicocca
- Naples Federico II and the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli
- Padua, Pavia and Turin
- Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona
- Sapienza and Tor Vergata in Rome
Together they offered about 1,200 medicine places for EU and Italy-resident candidates in 2026, plus a separate quota for non-EU applicants living abroad.
Private universities set their own entry tests, usually in spring. They include Humanitas University and Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan, plus UniCamillus and Università Cattolica in Rome. Fees at private universities are much higher: San Raffaele lists €20,690 for 2026/27.
EU medical schools in Central and Eastern Europe
This is the biggest cluster outside Italy. Each university runs its own admissions, usually a biology and chemistry test, an interview or a review of your grades. Fees for 2026/27 ranged from about €10,000 a year in Cluj-Napoca and Sofia to €24,250 at Charles University's First Faculty.
- Czech Republic: Charles University (First, Second and Third Faculties in Prague, plus Hradec Králové and Pilsen), Masaryk University in Brno and Palacký University in Olomouc.
- Hungary: Semmelweis University, the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged and the University of Pécs.
- Poland: the Medical University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University Medical College in Kraków and the Medical University of Gdańsk, among others.
- Slovakia: Comenius University in Bratislava and its Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin.
- Romania: Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, with 200 English-track places in 2026/27.

- Baltic states: the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences in Kaunas and Riga Stradiņš University in Latvia.
- Croatia: the University of Zagreb and the University of Split, both with Medical Studies in English.
Island options: Ireland, Malta and Cyprus
These three complete the main list of medical schools in Europe that teach in English.
- Ireland: RCSI, University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork and the University of Galway. Teaching and patient contact are in English, but non-EU fees are high: RCSI lists around €62,000 for 2027/28.
- Malta: the University of Malta, where teaching and assessment are in English, and Queen Mary University of London's MBBS in Malta, now taking applications for September 2027.
- Cyprus: the University of Nicosia's 6-year MD for school leavers.
How to narrow down European medical schools in English
Filter the list in four steps:
- Entry route: decide whether you will prepare for the IMAT, university tests and interviews, or grade-based admission.
- Budget: tuition ranges from around €10,000 a year in Romania and Bulgaria to over €60,000 for non-EU students in Ireland.
- Language: check how many semesters of local language each school requires.
- Career plans: think about where you want to practise, and check recognition before you commit.

Frequently asked questions
How many medical schools in Europe teach in English?
The list above names more than 50 universities and faculties across 13 countries, and the number keeps growing. The University of Florence, for example, joined Italy's IMAT list for 2026/27. Programmes open and close, so confirm each school's current English-taught intake on its official admissions page before you apply.
Which EU medical schools in English are the most affordable?
Romania and Bulgaria are among the lowest. Iuliu Hațieganu in Cluj-Napoca charged €10,000 a year for 2026/27 and the Medical University of Sofia €9,950. Italian public universities can cost less for EU students, because fees are income-based, but IMAT places are highly competitive. Fees change every year.
