Business School Madrid: IE or ESADE for an International Student?

If you are looking for a business school Madrid can offer international MBA students, the two names you will hear most are IE and ESADE. The key fact is location: IE Business School teaches its full-time International MBA in Madrid, while ESADE's Full-Time MBA is taught in Barcelona, with only executive programmes running in Madrid.

IE vs ESADE: how do the MBAs compare?

Both are leading Spanish schools with highly international classes, but their flagship MBAs differ in length, intake and price.

Fees rise most years, so check the current figures on the ESADE fees page and the IE International MBA page before you budget.

Is ESADE a business school Madrid students can attend?

Only part-time. ESADE has a Madrid campus, but there it runs its Executive MBA (with monthly sessions in Madrid and Barcelona) and executive master's programmes. Its Full-Time MBA, its MSc programmes and its law master's degrees are taught in Barcelona. If you want to study full-time and live in Madrid, IE is the option of the two.

The two cities suit different plans. Madrid is Spain's capital and financial centre, which helps if you are aiming at banking, consulting or a corporate headquarters. Barcelona is a coastal city with a strong start-up and design scene, and recent estimates put living costs for ESADE students at around €2,300 a month. The choice of city should follow the life and industry you want, not just the ranking.

How do teaching and careers differ?

IE Business School describes its International MBA as hands-on and experiential, with labs, projects and internships. Its Liquid Learning model blends classroom and digital work, and you can study in English or in a bilingual English and Spanish format. A January intake means you do not have to wait for September, and IE's alumni network counts more than 65,000 people. Our profile of IE in Madrid describes the school's culture in more detail.

ESADE builds its programme around core courses in the first seven months, then electives, internships, exchanges and an international immersion. The 15 and 18-month options leave more room for internships and exchanges, which matters if you are changing career. ESADE reports that 90% of graduates find a job within three months, 57% work outside their home country, and 96% change function, sector or location.

Which one fits you?

Start with where you want to work in three years. If the answer is Spain, the city and the language matter a great deal. If it is London, Dubai or New York, compare each school's recruiters and alumni in that market instead.

  • Choose IE if you want to live in Madrid, start in January, finish fast or study partly in Spanish.
  • Choose ESADE if you prefer Barcelona, want flexibility on length to fit in an internship, or are planning a major career switch.
  • Apply to both if you are open on city: the applications differ, but the timelines overlap.

Both expect a clear career plan. Our guide to the motivation letter for European MBA programmes shows how to argue it, and our overview of MBA requirements covers the rest of the file.

Frequently asked questions

Is IE Business School better than ESADE?

Neither is better for everyone. In the Financial Times 2026 Global MBA ranking, ESADE graduates reported an average salary of about $206,000 three years after graduating, adjusted for purchasing power. IE offers a shorter programme, two intakes and Madrid. The right choice depends on your target city, industry and timeline.

Do you need Spanish for an MBA at IE or ESADE?

No. Both full-time MBAs can be studied in English, and IE also offers a bilingual format. Spanish becomes important if you want to work in Spain afterwards, especially outside multinational firms. Starting lessons before you arrive gives you a real advantage in local recruiting.

How do the IE and ESADE admissions processes differ?

IE adds an online assessment with recorded video answers and accepts a video or presentation in place of a written essay. ESADE requires two recommendations and a mandatory interview for shortlisted candidates. Both accept the GMAT, the GRE or their own admissions test.
